The number of online casino players remains at a low level
The number of German casino players on the Internet is not very large. This is shown in the research report ” Gambling Behavior and Gambling Addiction in Germany ” published in February 2018 . It was published by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA). 4.8 percent of those surveyed in 2017 for the report stated that they had previously played at least once in an online casino. In 2007 it was only 1.3 percent, but in 2011 it was 6.9 percent.
For comparison: In the lottery “6 out of 49”, the proportion of those who played at least once was 54.6 percent in 2017. The percentage of online casino players is even lower if you look at the last twelve months before the survey. Only 0.6 percent of those surveyed said in 2017 that they had played casino games at least once in the online casino in the past twelve months.
Online casino players in Germany: tend to be male!
The BZgA research report already mentioned also reveals a lot about typical demographic data of online casino players. According to the research report, men play more often than women. While 7.1 percent of men said they had played online casino at least once in their lives, the proportion of women was only 2.5 percent.
When asked who played in the online casino in the last twelve months, the proportion of male internet gamers reached 0.9 percent and that of internet gamers 0.3 percent. Information on the typical age of online gamblers can be found in the HRI study “The Digitization of Gambling”. Accordingly, the 18- to 24-year-olds are underrepresented as online gamblers. 28 percent of them said they played such games online. Another 14 percent said they played online and offline. The other age groups were similar in terms of participation, with the group of 25 to 34 year olds (37 percent: online; 19 percent: online and offline) leading slightly.
A similar picture with significantly lower percentages shows up when one narrows the online gambling to the online casino. According to the study, four percent of the 18- to 24-year-olds have already played in the online casino. In the 25 to 34 year olds it was seven percent, in the older age groups five or six percent.
More data on games and players
Online gamblers mainly play at home. This is shown by the Handelsblatt study already mentioned. 66 percent of the online gamblers surveyed stated that they played the games of chance (also or exclusively) from home. Further data in the study reveal something about the preferred access to gambling offers on the Internet. 48 percent of the respondents played (also or exclusively) on the stationary PC, 46 percent with a laptop and 32 percent with a smartphone. A tablet used 25 percent. In contrast, the virtual reality glasses and augmented reality casino applications with two percent each were still used very rarely.
The HRI study also asked what online gamblers are particularly important about online casinos. 43 percent named the security / guarantee of the payout, 32 percent each a high chance of winning and a fair execution of the game and 30 percent the possibility to play from home. It was important for 35 percent of the respondents that the game is legally permitted. Exactly that is currently opaque at online casinos in Germany, which however – also the study shows – was hardly known at least at the time of the survey. At the time, only five percent of those surveyed classified online casino games as illegal.
The question of the payment methods offered by the online casinos is also likely to be exciting on the German gambling market. For a long time, the online payment service provider PayPal was considered a standard for many payment transactions between customers and casinos. However, PayPal seems to be planning to withdraw from parts of the online casino world. In some large and renowned online casinos such as the 888 Casino and some others, PayPal is no longer offered among the many payment options.
Responsible gaming: measures against gambling addiction
Gambling on the Internet is always linked to the topic of “gambling addiction”. It means excitement and fun as long as you can stop at any time and not play for money that you desperately need. Various players in the gaming market take care to reduce the risk of gambling addiction. In Germany, for example, this is the federal institute for health education already mentioned at the federal level and institutions such as the state coordination center for gambling addiction in North Rhine-Westphalia at the state level. But the online casinos themselves and other players are also committed to the risk of addiction to the game and offer programs for responsible gaming with self-limitation and other options. The engagement of various groups will probably be in demand here in the future.
Trends? An attempted look into the future!
Where are the online casinos heading in Germany? Where are you headed worldwide? Qualified forecasts are difficult. The development in Germany will certainly depend on which measures the state will take in future to regulate the online market. However, the coming development also depends on current trends in technical options for online gambling as well as game preferences.
The payment service provider IntraPay, for example, names some of these trends in the report “Growth factors in the iGaming market”, which it presented at the Sigma trade fair in Malta at the end of 2018. According to the report, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) will play a greater role in the future to provide customers with a more immersive gaming environment. As mentioned earlier, their role in online gambling is still small. Other trends mentioned in the report include:
strategic partnerships between payment service providers, gaming platforms and game developers,
increasing pressure on online casino providers to take action against problematic gaming behavior,
a convergence of the online gaming industry and the gaming industry, through which games of chance and video games merge more strongly,
new ideas for accelerated deposits and withdrawals. Reference is made, for example, to a new process by some online casinos through which winnings are quickly credited to customers’ credit cards.
Which trend ultimately prevails remains open. The future will show where the path for online casinos in Germany really leads. One can be excited.
